The Chairperson of the Africa Union (AU) has called on African countries to play their role by contributing to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for the continent to gain economic independence.

The Comorian President was speaking at a media briefing at the 2nd Ordinary Session of the 6th Parliament of the Pan Africa Parliament being held in Midrand, South Africa.

Speaking through a translator, Azali Assoumani encouraged African legislators to establish appropriate conditions to promote socio-economic development in Africa through the AfCFTA.

"As far as the African continent is concerned, especially the youth, Africa belongs to us. We have struggled for the political independence of our continent, but we do not have economic independence. This is why everyone should contribute to the target of economic independence through AfCFTA. Everyone has a role to play; everyone must contribute. We need to have a mechanism that allows us to work together, both in the public and private sectors, to see what better decisions we can make for Africa."

He also touched on the issue of climate change, saying it remains a problem for Africa's small island states.

"I have the intention to make sure that in Africa, especially small island states, they need to contribute to COP28. Africa has grievances, and indeed, this climate change issue concerns everyone. Among all the problems we have to manage this issue, it is very serious."

He also committed to supporting the Pan-African Parliament in realising its mandate as a legislative organ of the Union.

"I am having a look at how we can solve the various problems, and as I have said, even if I am not the chairperson of the AU anymore, I am the president of Comoros, and I will help you fulfil your responsibility as far as the African citizen is concerned, especially concerning the youth."

The 2nd Ordinary Session of the 6th Parliament of the PAP is being held under the African Union theme for 2023: "Accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area."
