The #ShutitAllDown Movement has threatened to stage a counter-demonstration against those who plan to protest against the recently delivered Supreme Court judgment, which ordered the Namibian government to legally recognise same-sex marriages concluded outside the country.
An online petition started by activist Ndiilo Nthengwe reads, "The creation of a WhatsApp group by politicians and church leaders with the purpose of promoting homo-bi-transphobia is not just a matter of expressing differing opinions. This is a form of intimidation and discrimination targeted at the LGBTQ+ community, and we will not be silenced," she said, adding that "discrimination is not a difference of opinion. It is intimidation and oppression."
The activist says that the anti-gay groups that mushroomed shortly after the landmark Supreme Court ruling are inciting violence and violating the dignity of Namibians.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Council of Traditional Leaders, Immanuel |Gaseb joined the chorus of those condemning the ruling.
|Gaseb says that if Namibians surrender to this wave of immorality, it will be a betrayal to those who sacrificed their lives for the country's freedom.
"The courts ought to create laws for us. We have duly mandated the lawmakers to make laws in Namibia; this sudden rise of the LGBTQ is an organised attack on the values of the African".
