Since it became a municipally governed area 12 years ago, Oranjemund continues to make progress in implementing capital projects in the current financial year.

Charles Kakuru, Acting CEO of the Oranjemund Town Council, says the infrastructure development promotes economic growth in the town.

"We have embarked on several projects in our council, starting with the construction of our Emergency Fire station, as it is commonly known. We embarked on that project last year in 2021 at a cost of about N$15 million, and the project is well within the timelines."

Other capital projects under construction include a Land Fill, a business park, and the servicing of land for housing development.

"So most of the funding, I would say 95% or 98%, is internally generated income. We are quite prudent in terms of revenue collection and how we spend that money. We have made sure there are tangible deliverables here so that the residents can see and feel that the money they pay to the council is being spent on projects that impact positively on their lives."

Once these become operational, the landfill is expected to offer 50 permanent jobs.
