Vendors in Tsumeb are set to trade with greater ease following the construction of an open market by the municipality along the town's main road.

Construction started in 2019 and is nearly fully complete, save for a few more touch-ups.

"It was partially funded by Dundee Precious Metals with the intention to accommodate the street vendors that are currently operating on the main road in the Hage Geingob road. We also used two institutions, NIMT and Cosdec, and the intention was to make the project as cost-effective as possible," explained Town Engineer at the Tsumeb Municipality, Manuel Pedro.

The market is made up of 23 cubicles and stalls for SMEs and salons.
 
The idea, though, is to move those vendors away from that area.

The market is only built to cater to 100 vendors, though, and involves a fee.

"What the Tsumeb Municipality is intending to do now is have a consultative meeting with the community. The budget for this financial year has been approved by the line ministry, so the fees for the vendors I cannot say now because I do not have the package, but we will inform the communities."

The project is anticipated to be completed this month.

The municipality spent over two million dollars on its construction.
