The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Utoni, says in the era of global interconnectivity, the acquisition of cultural identity can only be envisioned on the basis of mutual respect and acceptance of diversity.

Utoni says people must first understand and appreciate each other's way of life as social culture identity, which is only possible if the nation is knowledgeable about their distinct cultures, traditions, and values.

Speaking at the Batsara annual cultural festival, Utoni observed that festivals are organised in celebration of heritage, culture, and traditions.

He noted that cultural festivals must be used to connect with families, inspire the nation to remember historical events, and impart knowledge as well as tradition to the next generation.

Utoni reminded the gathering of the role of traditional authorities in promoting peace and welfare in the community and ensuring that customary laws and norms are observed.

He added that disputes between community members are heard and settled in accordance with customary laws.

Utoni appealed to the traditional authorities in Namibia to do away with gender discrimination and include women in their leadership structures.

Zambezi Governor, Alufea Sampofu, reminded the youth of the importance of cultural traditions, values, and norms, which he said would provide a sense of belonging.

"We currently have a very smooth tarred road in this area, which makes it very easy to carry both people and products. This region now has electricity, which was unheard of for many years."

Sampofu encouraged the community to appreciate the peace and stability that still prevail in the country and join forces with the government in meeting the national development plans.

Judea Constituency Councillor Humphrey Divai stressed that culture is part of the people, and they cannot live normal lives without it.

"She says the expression of culture through the arts helps unite people from different cultures and religions in a friendly atmosphere. This is a great chance to celebrate peace itself; therefore, eyes and ears are ready and geared to feed on what this day means for us."

Divai encouraged organisers of cultural festivals to ensure that they document such events so that the future generation does not lose track of their origin.
