Swapo Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa inaugurated the amended Constitution of the Swapo Party Women's Council (SPWC) at Omuthiya.

During the 7th Ordinary Congress of the Swapo Party in Windhoek last year, revisions were made to the constitution of the SPWC to align it with the party's framework.

Shaningwa emphasised that the revision of the SPWC constitution serves as a testament to the Swapo Party's unwavering dedication to the advancement of women's emancipation.

She highlights that Swapo has embraced the principle of 50/50 gender representation across all its structures, as stipulated in the party's constitution and policy documents.

"Indeed, it is a well-known fact that the word is continuously changing, as are the political dynamics within our political landscape. We must therefore continue to review our constitutions and policy documents to enable them to speak to the current political environment and contemporary challenges. Our party constitution is a living document that is worth cherishing."

Shaningwa says it is therefore imperative for the party to consistently review its constitutions and policy documents, ensuring alignment with the contemporary political landscape and prevailing challenges.

Shanigwa also says the Swapo Party Women's Council bears a significant responsibility for working towards achieving gender equality.

This endeavour encompasses enabling women to fully engage in the pursuits of economic and cultural emancipation and the development of a profound political awareness among Namibian women.

The Swapo Party Secretary-General also dismissed as baseless claims suggesting discord between herself and Oshikoto Regional Coordinator Armas Amukwiyu due to alleged competition for the position of Swapo Party Secretary-General.

Oshikoto Regional Coordinator Armas Amukwiyu commended the Swapo Party Women's Council for their laudable efforts, highlighting their role in enhancing the party's standing.

"We are here to celebrate women in the Swapo Party; we are here to celebrate the wonderful job that you have done; you have made us proud as a party, and I would like to recognise SPWC. We consider you and we regard you as the blood vein of the Swapo Party; without you, the future of this party is doomed."
