The Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare, Doreen Sioka, officially inaugurated the Likwaterera Early Childhood Development Centre in the Kavango East Region.

Since 2016, learners at the centre used to attend classes in thatched houses until these were destroyed by a hailstorm last year.

The Likwaterera Early Childhood Development Centre caters to children from marginalised backgrounds.

The centre features three fully equipped classrooms, an office, a storeroom, a kitchen, child-friendly ablution facilities, furniture, appliances, books, and toys.

There is also a small vegetable garden.

It can accommodate over 100 children.

Sioka says the project will break the inter-generational cycle of marginalisation and exclusion of marginalised communities.

"This investment will produce, in the long run, more educated adults who are better and more productive citizens with improved earning potential and capacity to contribute to the progress of Namibia's development in line with the county's development agenda. Education has been identified as an essential and most appropriate tool for the self-development of the marginalised communities to empower the present and future generations of the indigenous minorities and subsequently overcome their social difficulties."

The minister called on all citizens to meet the government halfway by participating in endeavours that contribute to the uplifting of marginalised communities.

The project was funded by the Palms for Life Fund in Namibia.

"I would also want to remind the parents that the basis of education is more than this building; it is an act of giving that happens at school and at home, so learning should not start and end in this building, but we should make sure that we support and teach our children at home; only then can we build a better nation," said Kingston Makoni, the coordinator of the fund.

Rundu Rural Constituency Councillor Paulus Mbangu applauded the Palm for Life Fund Namibia and the Ministry of Gender Equality for the centre's development.

"We are very grateful. What you have done here is a clear demonstration of the love of God. The love of God can only be demonstrated through positive actions. I am quite sure today that the community will have a very peaceful sleep because they are blessed with this very modern infrastructure."
