President Hage Geingob and his delegation arrived in New York at midday local time, ahead of the 78th UN General Assembly due to commence on Monday, September 18.

The official opening will be followed by statements from various heads of state and governments, with general debates to follow thereafter, spanning the next two weeks.

The 78th session of the UN General Assembly is being held under the theme "Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all".

President Geingob will address the General Assembly on Wednesday, September 20th, as the 4th speaker.

On Tuesday, President Geingob is also billed alongside President Macky Sall of Senegal to officially co-launch the International High-Level Panel Campaign on Water Investments for Africa, entitled ‘Mind the Gap: Invest in Water’.

The Namibian delegation, also comprising Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials from various ministries, will participate in a number of high-level engagements on the margins of the UNGA debates.

These include intergenerational panel discussions to assess water needs and strengthen multilateralism on water issues.

Another is the high-level political forum on sustainable development, during which world leaders are expected to carry out a comprehensive review of the state of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, assess the impact of multiple and interlocking crises facing the world, and provide high-level political guidance on transformative and accelerated actions towards the target year of 2030.
