The Day of the Namibian Child was officially celebrated in the Zambezi Region today.
The 28th of September, declared the national day for the Namibian Child by the Namibian Cabinet in the year 2000, has been celebrated annually and this year under the theme "The rights of the child in a digital environment" at the main event, which took place at Masokotwani in the Sibbinda constituency.
The Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare, Doreen Siyoka, stressed the ministry's continued efforts to safeguard Namibian children's overall well-being.
Siyoka referred to the recent launch of the child care and protection database in June this year.
"This electronic database, also known as the health information system database, represents a significant milestone in our mission to safeguard the rights and wellbeing of children. It empowers our social workers to better monitor, help, and understand each child in every situation, detect patterns, and enhance the efficiency of our interventions."
Also at the event was UNICEF Country Representative, Samuel Ocran.
"The day that Namibia joined the world and became the first African country to sign and ratify the Convention of the Rights of the Child, six months after the country gained independence, is no little achievement, considering that the country was young but deemed it important to sign and ratify the Convention of the Rights of the Child."
UNICEF, as part of its contribution to the day, also donated 118 school uniforms to three schools in the region for learners in need.
