The |Khomas Regional Council has started to reach out to rural areas with drought relief food supplies.

This is the first time the community has received food relief since COVID-19.

The Windhoek Rural Councillor, Piet Adams, says the objective of drought relief is to build a caring society.

“We want to restore some dignity in the lives of our people; the effects of poverty are more than just missing a meal. Families struggle with chronic food insecurity, hunger, and malnutrition. When families don't have food, their livelihood suffers."

The drought relief is only meant for rural areas, as urban dwellers are catered for by other programmes.

The governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua stated that more interventions are needed as rural areas rely mostly on rain for farming.

“ COVID-19 pandemic and the past drought induced by climate change socioeconomic and demographic stems beyond our control taught us a hard lesson to continue assessing our preparedness for any eventuality this mentioned always has devastating effects on people's livelihoods."

Those were the main reasons why the government has intervened to subsidize some problems experienced by affected communities.
