NamWater is working to restore water supply to the affected communities in the Oshikoto and Ohangwena regions.

Thus far, the water utility has made significant progress in resolving the recent water supply decrease due to critical maintenance work carried out on its infrastructure, which resulted in water interruptions from the source downstream to the two regions.

In a media statement, NamWater announced that the water level in the canal at Ogongo has now risen to 880 mili-metres, exceeding the usual 750 mili-metre level.

NamWater further assures residents that it is also addressing restrictions on smooth water supply, which are caused by weeds and sand piles in the canal between Oshikuku and Onampira.

"NamWater has a routine cleaning of a canal almost every year as we are approaching the festive season, which is now December towards January, so most of the people are in the north since we have to prepare for the cleaning of the canal so that we have more production from the treatment plant. Hence, all the community members, please, must bear with us so that we can do everything that we want to do and prepare for December and January for good water production."

Over the weekend, the water utility managed to build up reserves, and their water supply system is now functioning at 60% capacity.

Reserves were also built up at Ondangwa, with water being pumped to all supply lines with the exception of Omuthiya in the Oshikoto region.

In Omuthiya, NamWater is increasing reservoir levels to build up pressure before resuming rural line pumping.

There has, however, been a rationing of water in Ongwediva for the past few weeks
