Tim Ekandjo, Chief Human Capital, Marketing, and Corporate Affairs Officer at MTC, has issued a cautionary note regarding the potential risks associated with the efficiency of online SIM card registration.
While acknowledging the effectiveness of the online registration process, Ekandjo highlighted the unintended consequence of providing an opportunity for fraudsters to access individuals' confidential details.
Over 17 thousand MTC's SIM card holders registered online within the first five hours of the launch of the online registration platform.
The online registration system has offered business opportunities to some, especially those in villages that charge a fee for assisting others to register.
For fraudsters, it is a perfect chance to access people's banking details.
MTC's Chief Human Capital Officer, Tim Ekandjo, says the company is monitoring the situation.
""On the ground, across the country, we've sent out a few notifications in terms of assisting our customers when they get assisted by others in terms of the online registration system, so yes, it's an efficient system because it verifies not only your personal information but it also allows you to take a picture of yourself and a picture of your ID, and if the two don't match, then of course the system will not allow it.''
As the deadline for SIM card registration draws near, mobile homes are flooded.
By the 5th of December, over nine hundred thousand SIM cards were registered with MTC, and Ekandjo noted the number has since gone up by fifteen percent.
Cognizant that registering many people at the same time could be impossible, Ekandjo stated that the focus is to register as many people as possible before the deadline.
However, the ICT Ministry has the final say as to what transpires thereafter, he says.
