Self-governance, education, health, and social services are some of the key pillars in advancing the interests of the Ovaherero people, which is part of the Ovaherero traditional authority's mandate.
Professor Mutjinde Katjiua highlighted this when his faction met at Toasis in the Aminuis Constituency of the Omaheke Region during their annual New Year gathering.
Professor Katjiua stated that through the Chief Council meeting held last year at Aminuis, the traditional authority took some resolutions aimed at advancing the economic development of the Ovaherero communities.
Katjiua added that the leadership will reflect and build on the foundation his predecessors laid, including genocide and land ownership.
Furthermore, Katjiua said that, despite all this, the Ovaherero people should continue to preserve and promote their cultural heritage.
"One important thing that I have noticed is the leadership. With good leadership skills, the traditional council should know their work, and the community should also know their role and what is expected from them. This should be clear to everyone, meaning leadership is key. If leaders are not communicating, we will remain at one place of not moving forward, and we shall remain underdeveloped, poor, and ruled by others, and this is not acceptable."
Another area the Traditional Authority will carry out this year is an outreach programme on community development.
They also paid homage to the heroes buried at Toasis village.
