Elections

The first day of election registration started at a slow pace in the Kavango East Region, and Electoral Commission of Namibia Commissioner Gerson Sindano has expressed his disappointment over it.

"All I have to say is that since I started registering at Sikanduko, the turnout so far has been a bit disappointing. I think Sikanduko was a little bit better. But there's a location, I think, Kasote, where we found literally three people queuing up, and it's very disappointing because we don't want to get into a situation where, when you come close to the due date, suddenly we have long queues."

Sindano further stated that despite the increased population, the ECN has put in measures to cater for all Namibians by increasing the registration points and registration days.

"So we are looking at 1.7 million eligible voters. And so what has happened is, if you look at the number of days allocated, 52 days, that's a lot. But then the sad part is that despite our effort to have all these 52 bases located because of the increase in population, the turnout from the beginning is always slow and very frustrating. But I am confident and hopeful that the Namibian people will turn up."

The election commissioner says road infrastructure is not a major challenge to limiting the ECN's coverage.

"What we have done is most of the four-by-four cars are the ones that have gone, you know, the farthest to some of the toughest terrain in the country. So we have done all we could to make sure that these four-by-four cars will have to go to every village, every farm, and every household you know to make sure that we register the people. So that's a challenge. That's a challenge. You know, certain areas are very remote."
