Dr. Hoze Riruako, the leader of a faction of the OvaHerero Traditional Authority, has called for peace within the community of OvaHerero amidst a bitter leadership dispute. 

This weekend saw both factions congregating in Okahandja for two separate Red Flag Day commemorations.

Dr. Riruako, a nephew of the late Paramount Chief Kuaima Riruako, said he is pained about the current division and refers to the state of affairs among the OvaHerero community as a nation at war with itself. 

"Make sure to maintain peace and unity amongst our people; it's a heavy call; it's a tall order, but one we must not escape. Chief Riruako, the late Paramount Chief, has faced similar and many other challenges. Chief Clemence Kapuuo faced the same; Chief Hosea Kutako had to deal with a number of pressure points, and I can tell you it is because of their desire for peace and great care for their nation that they have averted these conflicts. I am calling upon each and every Herero to gather here to maintain peace at all costs."

He said the current squabbles are proving harmful to the entire OvaHerero community.

"A few weeks ago, the government was preparing to hand over the Chief Hosea Kutako Shrine at Toasis but due to circumstances beyond their control, this treasure that is honouring one of our leaders has now been postponed because we are at loggerheads with one another. Our nation is facing severe problems because of our own actions. Threats have been meted out against one another; there have even been calls for bloodshed."

He said the history of the OvaHerero, who survived a genocide, illustrates resilience and rebuilding after hardship, and he urged his subjects to confront the current obstacles with renewed vigour.
