Two people have died after an Intercape bus and an Iveco minibus collided head-on about 57 kilometres north of Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa Region.

According to Otjozondjupa Police’s community liaison officer, Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha, the accident occurred this morning.

Mbeha says the Intercape bus, which had 59 passengers, fell to its side. Visuals from the Intercape monitory camera show the Iveco overtaking another vehicle and colliding head-on into the bus.

The bus driver sustained serious injuries to both legs and is to be airlifted to Ongwediva Medi Park. The rest of the passengers with injuries were transported to Otjiwarongo State Hospital, where they are being attended to.

The Intercape bus was en route from Oshakati to Windhoek, while the Iveco was heading from Walvis Bay towards the north.

Mbeha adds the names of the deceased persons are currently unknown and the next of kin is not informed. Police investigations continue.
