The Zambezi Region's Education Directorate discussed the national examination performance of the learners over the previous years.

The Zambezi Region has 120 schools, of which 111 are government, while nine are privately owned.

It was ranked number 10 in the Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate Ordinary (NSSCO) and number 8 in the Advanced Subsidiary Levels (AS) in the last exams.

In this year's first semester, Grade 11 learners performed poorly in subjects such as mathematics and history compared to Grade 12 AS level.

As part of the strategies to improve performance, the ministry urged schools to conduct textbook audits, re-establish textbook committees, and enforce the utilisation of 60% of the grant for the curriculum.

The Minister of Education, Art, and Culture, Anna Nghipondoka, explained that pre-vocational subjects need to be strengthened in schools.

"We need to strengthen the offering of pre-vocational subjects in our schools by ensuring that our workshops are well equipped for our children to be able to do practical subjects."

The regional improvement plan will also include repairing broken furniture and conducting a furniture audit.

It will also focus on human resources by conducting skills audits and training teachers in critical subjects such as chemistry, physics, and mathematics.

Nghipondoka further said parents need to be trained in order to assist their children.

"Train parents, especially at lower primary, for them to be highly involved in assisting their children with regard to their schoolwork."

Challenges highlighted at the meeting include a shortage of classrooms in rural areas, poor and lack of ablution facilities, a lack of libraries and laboratories, a lack of water and electricity, and a shortage of hostels; lack of discipline among the learners; an increase in teenage pregnancy; teachers lack of commitment; staff turnover; and lengthy disciplinary procedures.

The minister added that career guidance teachers should be introduced in schools to help learners choose the right career.
