The two women who died in an accident involving an Intercape bus and an Iveco minibus on the B1 road outside Otjiwarongo on Tuesday have been identified by their relatives.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) crime investigations coordinator in the Otjozondjupa Region, Deputy Commissioner Edna Nawa, told Nampa on Friday that the deceased were identified as Selina Neumbo, 52, and 36-year-old Ndinelago Shipuka.
Neumbo was a passenger in the Intercape bus, while Shipuka was travelling in the Iveco minibus.
The two buses collided on the road between Otavi and Otjiwarongo.
Nawa said the accident occurred around 01:30 on Tuesday morning, about 57 kilometres north of Otjiwarongo.
The Intercape bus with 59 passengers was driving from Oshakati to Windhoek when it collided with the Iveco minibus, which was headed in the opposite direction with 10 passengers.
“It is alleged that the Iveco overtook another vehicle, and in the process, the head-on collision with the Intercape bus occurred,” stated Nawa.
Neumbo died on the spot, while Shipuka died while being transported to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital.
The drivers of both vehicles and several passengers sustained minor to serious injuries and have been transferred to hospitals in the Oshana and |Khomas regions from the Otjiwarongo State Hospital, where they were seen by medical doctors on Tuesday, said Nawa.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
