Okahandja Municipality will soon have a fire station.

Currently, firefighters operate from the municipal offices.

Okahandja has a population of over 46,000 residents.

Each year, the emergency unit responds to approximately 72 shack fires, four to five house fires, and 80 percent of road accidents in the region.

Given the enormous pressure to respond to emergencies, Deputy Mayor Akser Aupindi highlighted the importance of the new fire station.

"This groundbreaking ceremony serves not only as a symbol of progress but also as a testament to our commitment to the health, safety, and well-being of every resident in Okahandja. Our firefighters are the guardians of our community, dedicated men and women who respond to emergencies with courage and resilience. They deserve the very best facilities to support their essential work, and today we take a vital step in ensuring they have the resources they need."

Okahandja Constituency Councillor Bethel Tjaveondja emphasised its role in the town's broader economic development. 

"Fire stations play a vital role in our community. There are various services offered by fire stations, such as emergency responders. One of the most critical services provided by fire stations is that of emergency responders. Firefighters are trained to respond quickly to a range of emergencies, including fires, floods, and natural disasters. They are equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to handle these situations, and their quick responses can mean the difference between life and death."

The ceremony also marked the inauguration of new municipal machinery, courtesy of Bank Windhoek. 

"With the acquisition of these machines, the municipality of Okahandja is in a much better position than it was previously. It is also a testament to the vision of the leadership of the municipality to improve service delivery within the town," says Bank Windhoek representative Claus Stein.
