A man who had been lost at sea for about two days was found safe last night.

44-year-old Namibian sailor Lisius Nkandi, who allegedly got lost after disembarking a fishing vessel and launching a rubber dingy near Cape Cross, was brought to safety, according to volunteer lifeguard and marine rescue captain Sean Naude.

Police reported on Tuesday that, the Namibian-registered fishing vessel sailed from the Walvis Bay harbour, streaming on her own power, with 10 crew members, including the captain and the chief mate, Lisius Nkandi, on Friday, August 2, at around 21:30.

The police say the next day, on Saturday (August 3), while the crew was sailing, the vessel got stuck on the cylinder head, could not move, and eventually broke down.

Six days later, on Friday, August 9, with the assistance of some fishing companies, seven (7) crew members were rescued and taken back to the harbour safely.

The police statement further said that nine days later, on Sunday, August 18, at about 14:00, Nkandi allegedly disembarked, launched a rubber dingy without any motor, and abandoned the vessel, sailing towards the land. Up to date, his whereabouts are unknown.

The captain and the chief technician are still on the vessel in the same area as the tugboat that was supposed to tow their boat yesterday, but has not arrived.
