The late Senior Traditional Councillor of the Ovaherero Traditional Authority, Usiel Kambirongo, was laid to rest at the Ozombuzovindinda Cultural Heritage site in the Otjinene Constituency. In accordance with his wishes, Kambirongo was buried in a rare standing position, facing east.

At 81 years old, Kambirongo passed away on August 5, 2024, after a prolonged illness. His burial in a standing position, a tradition from the past, is unfamiliar to many but reflects his unique character.

Ovaherero Traditional Authority faction leader, Ombara Hoze Riruako, noted that such an extraordinary burial is a mark of a remarkable individual. "It is usually the hallmark of unique people to live life in a distinctive way," Riruako said. "In the past, some were buried standing, and this is no sinister act for those who understand our culture. Kambirongo wanted to face the east, where the sun rises, symbolizing his strong presence in our Red Flag parades."

Dr. Riruako highlighted Kambirongo's significant contributions not only to traditional affairs but also to the agricultural sector. "Our community has lost an icon. In Otjiherero, we say 'onganda ikuaterua,' symbolizing that his legacy will stand tall in the history of this nation. His name will be remembered when the annals of history are called."

A family member, Kuseueendo Kambirongo reflected on the lasting impact the late Kambirongo had on the family and the community. "We need peace during this time of his passing, and it should be a moment for unity, despite our differences, especially here in Otjinene."

The late Usiel Kambirongo is survived by his wife and 46 children. Various traditional and national leaders gathered to witness his unique and symbolic burial.
