Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Utjiua Muinjangue, has raised concerns about the increasing abuse of alcohol and drugs among young people. She linked this growing crisis to the rising unemployment rate.
In support of a motion advocating for more affordable and accessible rehabilitation centers, some MPs called on the government to integrate vocational training facilities within these centers for recovery and future employment.
Dr. Muinjangue has expressed concern over the rapid increase of alcohol sales, which is fueling school dropouts, gender-based violence, and addiction.
She added that rehabilitation centers should not be the only go-to places for dealing with substance abuse.
Swapo Party's MP Jerry Ekandjo emphasised that the rise in alcohol abuse is not just a social issue but a socio-economic problem.
