Members of the Mine Workers Union of Namibia (MUN) Northern Region branch have been cautioned to steer clear of tribalism and internal conflicts. This warning was issued by the union's Acting Vice President, Mbidhi Shavuka, during the 13th Northern Regional Biennial Conference held in Tsumeb.

Shavuka expressed concern that tribalism, corruption, and favoritism are creating divisions among union members. He stated:
"Tribalism is rearing its ugly head. Some people are using the union as a stepping stone to a lavish lifestyle or political status, and in doing so, they mislead others by spreading false accusations about fellow comrades. We have more than 10,000 members, but only a few leadership positions available."

Shavuka also urged members to support the union's activities, emphasizing the importance of striving for a positive public image:

"We cannot be an organization that is only in the spotlight for negative reasons. Although the union is in a stable but critical situation, I want to assure you that, contrary to reports in the media and on social platforms, the Mine Workers Union is in good hands. The members are being served as they should be, but the leadership needs support from the members on the ground."

The biennial conference, held every two years, also saw the election of new regional office bearers who will serve on the national executive committee. The elected officials include Mathew Poco-Key Mberiuana as Regional Chairperson, Veiko Haupindi as Deputy Chairperson, Tresa Martin as Regional Secretary, Basson Kandenge as Deputy Regional Secretary, Konias Emvula as Regional Treasurer, and Stephanus Lukas as Deputy Regional Treasurer.

The two-day conference was held under the theme "Forward to Unity and Social Empowerment of Workers."
