Literacy is a fundamental right that encompasses much more than the ability to read or write.

The ||Kharas Governor, Aletha Frederick, made this statement while addressing the belated International Literacy Day celebration ceremony in Keetmanshoop.

The ||Kharas Education Directorate's Adult and Continuing Education subdivision organised the event, themed "Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace."

"The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation recognises literacy as essential for personal development, social cohesion, and economic growth. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development emphasises that quality education is the goal, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable education while promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all," she said.

Embracing multilingual education, Frederick noted, enhances communication across different languages and cultures, thereby nurturing respect and appreciation among communities.

"When we promote multilingual education, we empower our children and adult learners to navigate and understand the world through various lenses. It allows learners from different backgrounds to feel valued and respected in their educational journey by recognising and incorporating their native languages into the curriculum. We affirm their identities while simultaneously promoting national unity."

The governor also stressed that adult learning is critical for community development.

An adult learner who recently completed the family literacy program celebrated Literacy Day by reciting a poem he authored.
