President Nangolo Mbumba says the governments of Namibia and Germany should do all they can to ensure that the painful past of genocide is resolved.

Dr. Mbumba said this upon his return from the working visit to Germany and Spain last night (Sun).

As the 1904-1908 genocide, apology, and reparations negotiations were in their final stages, President Mbumba reiterated that the matter be resolved between Namibia and Germany.

The Head of State acknowledges that the process would take time but is worth pursuing for the development of both countries.

"The most important thing is that we should do whatever needs to be done so that the more than 100-year issue between us and Germany of the genocide that took place here is put in its proper context, although not in one day, but start step by step resetting it so that we can as friends help one another."

As representatives of the Global North and Global South blocs, Namibia and Germany co-chaired the UN Summit of the Future last month.

President Mbumba's visit to Germany and participation in the Hamburg Sustainability Conference were continuations of the discussions premised on the need for collective and large-scale solutions to challenges.

"And we were received by the Chancellor of Germany, which is equivalent to a prime minister in some systems; the whole idea is that we live in a world that is divided, the rich against the poor, the south against the north, those who are well to do not care about what other people are suffering from, and we are talking about sustainable development will only come when all of humanity understand one another and they are working and pulling in the same direction."
