The executive committee of the Pan African Youth Union (PYU) has been urged to enhance its relevance to ensure its impact is felt in communities. 

This call to action was made during the ongoing PYU meeting in Swakopmund.

As the main body for youth matters, the union coordinates national youth organisations across Africa. Erongo Governor Neville Andre emphasised the need for the union to increase its visibility and relevance, particularly in Southern Africa.

"PYU should prioritise issues specific to Southern African youth, such as high unemployment, rural development, and the digital divide. By addressing these challenges and advocating for tailored solutions, PYU will become more relevant to the needs of young people in this region," he stated.

In his opening remarks, Andre highlighted that African youth are grappling with challenges such as inequality, climate change, and digital transformation. He urged the union to discuss solutions to these issues over the course of the four-day meeting.

Secretary General Ahmed Wiisichong remarked that it is crucial for the executive committee to define the future direction of the union. 

"This may not appear to be a large meeting, but it will significantly shape the reconfiguration of youth engagement on the continent for years to come. It will determine the level of inclusivity, the review of the African Youth Charter, and how our governments will interact with us as youth actors and stakeholders within the development ecosystem. Historically, it will serve as a blueprint for your ongoing engagement with the Pan African Youth Union."

The National Youth Council of Namibia is hosting this meeting, which aims to amplify youth development on a continental level.
