Youth with disabilities face a significant challenge in educating employers about reasonable and suitable accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
During the opening ceremony of the 3rd National Elective Congress of the Namibian Organisation of Youth with Disabilities, Deputy Minister of Disability Affairs Alexia Manombe-Ncube emphasised this point.
The Congress is attended by approximately 100 young people with disabilities from across Namibia's 14 regions. Its goal is to raise awareness about the challenges and aspirations of young individuals with disabilities in the country.
Manombe-Ncube stated that the discussions at Congress, focused on advocacy, empowerment, and collaboration, are especially timely. She highlighted the urgent need for continued progress in education, accessibility, employment, and social inclusion for persons with disabilities.
She also pointed out the necessity to brainstorm solutions for issues affecting youth with disabilities. "From the government's side, particularly in Disability Affairs, we have worked to increase the number of graduates with disabilities. However, we need to investigate the reasons why many of them are still unable to find employment and adjust our strategies accordingly."
Speaking on behalf of Erongo Governor Neville Andre, Jacky Gaingob stressed the importance of the government and private sector providing the tools, opportunities, and support systems essential for people with disabilities to thrive.
"As stakeholders from various sectors, you are gathered here to engage in important discussions that will shape the future of our youth with disabilities. I hope these discussions not only highlight the challenges but also pave the way for innovative solutions and collaborative actions. Let us remember that the future we build must be one where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can contribute to and benefit from Namibia's growth and prosperity."
This congress will also elect new leadership.
