The Keetmanshoop Town Council elected Councillor Annelize Knaus of the Landless People's Movement (LPM) as the new mayor during today's annual mayoral election.
Councillor Easter Isaak nominated Knaus for the mayor position, and former Mayor McDonald Hanse seconded the nomination.
Knaus, a Landless People's Movement councillor, is taking over from her LPM predecessor, Hanse.
Councillors Fatima Jossop and Johannes Vries will serve on the management committee, chaired by Isaak.
Knaus expressed her gratitude for being elected as mayor.
''First I want to thank God for this opportunity, and secondly I want my national party leadership. Yes, I feel good. I look forward to this challenge.''
When asked about her priorities for socio-economic development as the newly elected mayor, Knaus had this to say.
''I don't think I will answer that question at the moment. I will do my acceptance speech in 2025, and everything will be in the acceptance speech.''
