The Zambezi Police Commander has issued a stern warning to residents, the business community, and travellers against illegal border crossings and transportation of undeclared goods, including contraband.

During a preliminary briefing on the festive season's safety campaign, Operation Rainbow, Commissioner Andreas Shilelo acknowledged that, while the crime rate in the region has not been high, illegal border crossings and the smuggling of undeclared goods remain persistent.

Shilelo emphasised that many individuals and business owners resort to illegal transportation of goods through ungazetted points to avoid paying tax.

He warned that the law enforcement is prepared to take action against violators.

He referred to a recent interception on Friday, where two men were caught transporting undeclared goods from Zambia into Namibia through an ungazetted point.

The men were apprehended while travelling in a vehicle loaded with smuggled cigarettes, shoes, and clothing.

The vehicle was registered in the name of a local businessman, who has previously been charged with crossing through unauthorised points and smuggling undeclared goods.

The Zambezi Police Commander reiterated that those involved in illegal border activities will be prosecuted, urging the public to comply with the law to ensure safety and maintain order.
