The Namibian Police continue to make strides towards infrastructure development, with the latest beneficiary being the Omusati Region, which received infrastructure valued at N$340 million.

When it was established in 2001, the Onheleiwa Police Station had only a charge office, built through collective effort from members of the community.

On Tuesday, new modern infrastructure was unveiled at the station, comprising a charge office, police barracks, and ablution facilities, along with a new vehicle.

Members of the police force put on a colourful display to celebrate the upgraded station, which will serve Onheleiwa and the broader Etayi constituency.

Speaking at the inauguration, police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo pledged that his force would remain steadfast in combating crime while ensuring that members have conducive areas to stay in and operate from.

"The inauguration of this facility marks a new chapter for the residents of Onheleiwa and the broader Etayi Constituency. It is not merely a building but a beacon of hope and a pillar of justice, signalling our collective resolve to address crime, maintain law and order, and safeguard the well-being of our citizens."

Omusati Governor Erginus Endjala applauded the NamPol leadership for accelerating the expansion of police stations in the region, which he said makes it easier for the public to access law enforcement.

He urged the public not to expect police to perform miracles when they are not willing to assist officers in their investigations.

"We cannot feel safer if the security of the country is compromised. Therefore, we have to applaud the inspector general of the police for their foresight to make sure that the conditions of their members were that they were operating in a conducive environment."

The Inspector General appealed to members of the police to go beyond serving only their local areas of jurisdiction and to provide assistance to anyone in need, thus fostering a culture of teamwork with neighbouring police stations.
