The Leonardville Village Council is striving to bring much-needed development, including housing provision, road networks, and ablution facilities, among other key services.
This was revealed by the Chairperson of the Village Council, Petra Witbooi, in an interview with nbc News.
The chairperson pointed out that despite limited resources, development is taking shape, as evidenced by the number of houses constructed under the Build Together project to address the housing backlog in Leonardville.
Another area receiving significant attention is the sewage system, the road network around the suburb, and the establishment of new ablution facilities.
"In our strategic plan, we promised to build at least 20 houses within this tenure. The ministry has availed funding for 500 Build Together houses, and recently, I was informed by my CEO that they have responded to our request for additional funding to build 10 houses. The initial funds we had were not enough, but now they have availed the extra money, and we can start soon. So we have a success story to share about the Build Together houses. Land has been allocated for these ten houses. Overall, development in Leonardville is ongoing, including improvements to water and electricity services."
To address youth unemployment, the Council plans to provide agricultural land for a community garden project to be managed by local young people.
This project also aims to ensure food sustainability for the community.
"We, as a council, have demarcated a plot in the old location next to the fish pond, where we will initiate a community garden. We have explained that we want the youth, who are most affected by unemployment, to run this gardening project. It must be a sustainable community project. We don't want it to be something where they just go and volunteer; at the end of the day, they should receive some form of incentive, as we all understand that young people today do not want to work for free."
Leonardville Village has a population of more than 3,000.
