A recent exemption from the Public Procurement Act enabled the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (nbc) to achieve full national connectivity using cost-effective solutions aligned with national development goals.

ICT Minister Emma Theofelus outlined that with an N$80 million allocation, the public broadcaster managed to expand its network and upgrade systems.

"The national broadcaster plans to transition from the existing C-band to a KU-band transponder. This transition will facilitate the integration of satellite networks using advanced satellite technology, eliminating gaps in broadcasting coverage and ensuring service availability in the most remote areas of the country. This comprehensive project is supported by a financial commitment of N$100 million over the next three financial years from the treasury."

Theofelus stated that the granted exemption will also go a long way for the national broadcaster to realise up to seven high-definition television channels, enhancing its broadcasting capacity.

The nbc recently completed a broadcasting tower on Impalila Island in the Zambezi Region, granting previously underserved communities access to TV and radio.

"The community, which previously lacked this access, will now benefit from enhanced connectivity. The broadcaster has procured 10 new electronic news-gathering cameras to improve the quality of its news coverage. These cameras are specifically distributed to its Oshakati, Rundu, Katima Mulio, Gobabis, and Katima regional offices. Its recently acquired Final Control Centre Playout Automation System allows nbc to scale up the program content to four active television channels, with a potential for expansion."

Theofelus also reported on progress regarding the N$20 million allocated for Namibia's Cybersecurity Incident Response Team under CRAN.

"The authority developed a NAMCSRT Governance and Operational Framework, pending their board approval. Appropriate hardware and software were received and installed to allow for the automation of core operations. Furthermore, there are concerted efforts to continue to develop international and local partnerships to enhance the NAMCSRT cybersecurity network."
