Leaders and community members in the Otjozondjupa region have joined the nation in mourning the passing of Namibia’s founding president, Dr. Sam Nujoma, sharing heartfelt condolences and memories of his remarkable legacy.
Marlene Mbakera, Chairperson of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council and Otjiwarongo Constituency Councillor, recalled Dr. Nujoma’s deep commitment to education and the welfare of children. “His generosity and dedication to improving the lives of the marginalized were unmatched,” she said. “He often said, ‘As long as I am alive, no child of a farmworker will be left out from accessing schools and education.’ His actions, like establishing a school and health center at his farm, truly reflected his love for the people.”
Imms Namaseb, the Swapo Party’s Otjozondjupa Regional Coordinator, also paid tribute to Dr. Nujoma’s enduring impact. “He was a brave and gallant son of Africa, a symbol of resilience, and a beacon of hope for all who sought freedom,” Namaseb said. “His leadership transcended borders, uniting us in the belief that no chains could forever bind a people determined to be free. His legacy will remain our heritage to cherish forever.”
Farmworkers at Etunda shared their personal experiences of living and working with Dr. Nujoma, describing him as a compassionate and visionary leader. “He gave us everything—growth, leadership, and opportunities,” one worker said. “He did so much for Etunda Trust, Namibia, and the world. While we are saddened by his passing, we accept that it was his time to go. May his soul rest in peace.”
Another worker added, “We lived with Tatekulu for many years, and he treated us with kindness. He provided us with uniforms, food parcels, and even built a clinic just 2 kilometers away. There’s also a school, though it’s not yet open due to water supply issues. Once it opens, our children will be so happy. We are heartbroken by his passing and don’t know how we’ll move forward. He gave us so much, including free access to water and electricity. May his soul rest in peace.”
The outpouring of grief and gratitude from Otjozondjupa reflects the profound impact Dr. Nujoma had on the lives of countless Namibians, leaving behind a legacy of unity, compassion, and progress.
