The Trans Kalahari Corridor Secretariat (TKCS) has announced the temporary closure of five border posts between Botswana and South Africa due to flooding.
The affected border posts are Stockpoort/Parr's Halt, Makgobistad/Phitshane Molopo, Bray, Groblersbridge/Martins Drift, and Pontdrift.
As a result, traffic will be diverted to the Trans Kalahari Corridor border posts, namely, Tlokweng/Kopfontein, Pioneer/Skilpadshek, and Ramatlabama.
The increased traffic at these borders is expected to cause delays and long queues.
The Executive Director of the TKCS, Leslie Mpofu, urged border authorities to implement swift solutions to mitigate the impact on transporters.
He also highlighted potential challenges, including environmental and sanitation concerns, increased littering, and a lack of potable water for truck drivers.
Travellers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, as congestion at alternative border posts is anticipated.
The TKCS will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as it evolves.
Additionally, transporters and travellers are cautioned about ongoing service delivery protests on the N4 highway between Zeerust and Skilpadshek, which may further impact travel.
