The Namibian Police continue to make strides towards the attainment of gender equality within the Force.

Deputy Inspector General for Operations Elias Mutota said women have, over the years, continued to play an indispensable role in leadership and law enforcement, among other things.

Major General Mutota was among the speakers who attended the annual commemoration of International Women's Day held at Opuwo.

Mutota emphasised that women's tireless efforts contribute to socioeconomic and political development, which makes it imperative for them to continue being recognised, empowered, and supported in all spheres of life.

Currently, there are 63 women in managerial positions, one Deputy Inspector-General, seven Commissioners, and 56 Deputy Commissioners, which is a clear demonstration of the Force's significant strides toward women's empowerment in the administration of the force.

"As the Namibian Police Force, we acknowledge the pivotal role women play in maintaining peace and security. The presence of women in law enforcement strengthens our ability to address Gender-Based Violence (GBV), child protection, and community policing in a manner that is inclusive, compassionate, and effective."

He is, however, concerned that gender-based violence against women and children remains a challenge for both men and women.

"However, as we celebrate progress, we must also recognise the challenges that persist. Gender-based violence remains a pressing issue, with women and girls often being the primary victims. This unacceptable reality calls for continuous efforts in strengthening our policies, intensifying community engagement, and ensuring the enforcement of laws that protect women and girls from harm."

He added that gender-based violence should be categorised as a crime against humanity, a violation of human rights that has far-reaching negative consequences.

Mutota also added that economic empowerment remains a key factor in achieving gender equality for both current and future generations if the playing field is levelled.
