The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Elsie Nghikembua, says the supplementary registration process is not merely a procedural step but a commitment to inclusivity and representation in the Electoral Act.
While addressing voter registration officials for the upcoming by-election, Dr. Elsie Nghikembua reminded the officials that the integrity and security of the voter registration system are critical in maintaining public trust in elections.
She urged them to approach the task of voter registration with the utmost seriousness.
"The Electoral Act mandates the training of all election officials at all levels to share best practices in systems, principles, and norms that underpin credible and transparent elections. The same knowledge must be cascaded down to the other categories of electoral officials to ensure that they are also well versed in their roles and responsibilities in the electoral process."
She warned the officials against coming with different intentions to the voter registration training, adding that those with such intentions must indicate so that they are not included in the training.
The ECN Chairperson stressed that voter registration officials are expected to assist the commission in carrying out the important national responsibility under their jurisdiction within the confines of the Electoral Act 5 of 2014.
She urged them to approach the process of conducting the by-election with enthusiasm and dedication.
"Just because you are under pressure and you are going to be under pressure does not give you the right to be rude to people or treat them anyhow. So you must manage your emotions."
Nghikembua emphasized that the commission will not tolerate any conduct that compromises its commitment to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
Supplementary voter registration starts on the 10th to the 12th of April for Kabbe, South, Grootfontein, Otjiwarongo, Sesfontein, and Kamanjab constituencies.
Voter registration for registration officials and IT officers that started on Saturday ended today (Tuesday).
