Activist Michael Amushelelo has been fined N$5,000 or, alternatively, sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for contempt of court.

Delivering the sentence, High Court Judge Anne-Doris Hans-Kaumbi also handed Amushelelo a two-year suspended sentence on the condition that he is not found guilty of a similar offence during the next six months.

Judge Hans-Kaumbi said that the sentence was not intended to punish Amushelelo personally but to uphold the dignity and authority of the judiciary.

“A threat to judicial respect will not be tolerated,” she said.
