Homeless people who were accommodated at the Khomasdal Stadium during the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 are still residing at the facility.
Public Relations Officer at the City of Windhoek, Lydia Hamutenya has confirmed that recommendations to relocate the residents is currently on the table.
The homeless have established a small community within the Khomasdal Stadium with more and more people moving in on a weekly basis.
However they raised concerns about poor living conditions, stating that the tents they had been given are worn out, exposing them to rain and other extreme weather conditions.
They also complain of poor sanitation and poverty, contributing to unfavourable conditions, especially for the children living with them.
Public Relations Officer at the City of Windhoek, Lydia Hamutenya, says they are aware of the concerns raised regarding the difficulties posed by the recent weather conditions.
Hamutenya says the responsibility of addressing the matter rests with the central government, as land allocation falls within the mandate of the Office of the Governor.
Nonetheless, she says that efforts are still underway to identify suitable alternative accommodation at Farm 508.
She added that the committee is active and will provide an update in the near future.
