Deputy Prime Minister Natangwe Ithete is in the northern regions of Namibia to assess the flood situation that displaced people and trapped some in their houses while some mahangu fields and roads are submerged and damaged.

Ithete has been briefed about the significant impact of flooding in the Ohangwena Region on infrastructure, education, healthcare, and agriculture.

The constituencies most severely affected by the rising floodwaters are Oshikango, Ongenga, Engela, Endola, and Ohangwena.

Currently, there are six relocation camps in the region, accommodating 782 people in 21 tents.

A total of 29 schools have been affected, with the majority fully or partially closed due to the floodwaters.

The number of learners impacted in the region is 7,236.

There is an urgent need for pit latrines at the Ouhongo, Ohaingu, and Ohangwena camps.

Tragically, two lives have been lost: a two-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl who drowned in separate incidents.
