The Swapo Party marks its 65th anniversary today.

Founded in 1960 as the successor to the Ovamboland People's Organization, Swapo played a pivotal role in Namibia's liberation struggle and has been the ruling party since the country gained independence in 1990.

Party spokesperson Hima Nikanor announced that a celebration will be held in Kamanjab, Kunene Region, within the next two weeks.

Swapo's first president, the late Dr. Sam Nujoma, led the movement during the liberation struggle and became Namibia's first president, serving from 1990 to 2005. He was succeeded by Hifikepunye Pohamba (2005–2015) and the late Hage Geingob (2015–2024).

Following Geingob's death in 2024, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was elected as Swapo president and sworn in as the country's head of state on March 21.

Despite experiencing a decline in electoral support in recent years, Swapo continues to hold a majority in the National Assembly.
