NamPower and Namdeb have signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate collaboration on developing and integrating renewable electricity projects into both the national grid and the mining giant’s operations.
In a statement issued, Namdeb Corporate Affairs Manager Grace Luvindao announced that Namdeb is developing a 34 MW wind power plant, which is located approximately 45 kilometres outside Oranjemund.
The wind power plant will only supply electricity to Namdeb.
Namdeb CEO Riaan Burger said the MoU signifies more than just a partnership but a statement of intent to responsibly and sustainably power progress.
On his part, NamPower MD Kahenge Haulofu noted the electricity supplier's goal of sourcing at least 70% from renewable energy by 2030 aligns well with Namdeb’s aim of becoming carbon neutral within the same time frame.
Luvindao said Namdeb, which is owned by the government and De Beers Group, continues to align its operations with national goals for industrialisation, clean energy transitions, and sustainable development.
This MoU, she added, marks a critical leap forward in securing a greener and more inclusive energy future for Namibia.
