Nurses from the Windhoek Central Hospital marked Nurses Day in celebration of the vital role they play in society.

The day is celebrated under the theme 'Our Nurses, Our Future: Caring for Nurses Strengthens the Economy', which highlights the critical link between nurse well-being and national prosperity.

Nurses' Day, which falls on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who was considered a pioneer of modern nursing, acknowledges the significant role nurses play as the backbone of public healthcare.

The special day promotes a sustainable future in healthcare by encouraging the government, private institutions, and the public to respect, value, and safeguard healthcare workers, particularly nurses.

The Minister of Health, Esperance Luvindao, urged the public to show more appreciation towards nurses and refrain from the tendency to portray nurses as bad people.

Dr. Luvindao also encouraged those who are new in the profession to learn from their seniors and take advantage of the knowledge they can provide.

"I was speaking to the team, and I said that I don't believe the issue of customer service is a difficult issue to deal with. I don't think so. I think that when you appreciate people, naturally, the customer service will also improve. Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system. From the national referral hospitals to remote clinics in the most rural parts of Namibia. From emergencies to routine care. It is our nurses who stand on the frontline."

The minister further stated that they are in the final stages of procuring new uniforms, as she has heard the plea of the nurses.

Control Registered Nurse at the Windhoek Central Hospital, Claudia Kambonde, said this is a day to honour the hands that heal, the voices that comfort and the hearts that care.

She said nurses can provide much better service when they are cared for, supported and empowered.

"This is a day not just in the vision of the profession; it is a day to celebrate those of us who have taken up the calling. One that demands sacrifice, empathy, and unyielding commitment to riding the suffering of those in our care."

Kambonde encouraged her fellow nurses to work hard and carry out their social duties to the best of their ability, as it will lead to a healthier nation, stronger families and a more resilient society.
