The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has called for an urgent Summit for Peace and Against War in the wake of recent developments in the Middle East.

Maduro says the summit should be held as soon as possible in light of the growing danger of a conflict that could trigger a global nuclear war.

He believes the meeting should take place in a country in West Asia to ensure the direct participation of the most involved stakeholders.

The Venezuelan President proposes that the meeting be led collectively by organisations such as the League of Arab States, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the African Union, the Gulf Cooperation Council, and BRICS, with the participation of China and the Russian Federation.

The summit should also seek to fully involve nations of the Global South committed to multilateralism.

Among the key commitments expected to be advanced at this high-level meeting are the creation of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in West Asia and a demand to the United Nations Security Council for an immediate mechanism for nuclear disarmament in Israel.

The Chair of the Non Aligned Movement and President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni has also called for an end of the conflict, asking for a return to diplomacy.
