The Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) has been accredited as a National Implementing Entity of the Adaptation Fund.

This gives EIF direct access to international climate financing, which could be used to roll out homegrown climate change projects across the country.

The Corporate Communications Manager at EIF, Romeo Muyunda, explained that the accreditation also enables the design and implementation of transformative initiatives that strengthen resilience against climate change in the most vulnerable communities.

"Under this accreditation, EIF can access up to US$20 million, approximately N$370 million, the country cap allocated by the Adaptation Fund to each eligible developing country. These resources will support Namibia in addressing the adverse impacts of climate change through locally led adaptation initiatives. EIF is already developing a series of transformative projects aimed at enhancing climate resilience across Namibia's communities and key economic sectors. These initiatives, designed in close consultation with government ministries, regional authorities, civil society, and local communities, are aligned with national development and climate adaptation priorities."

EIF has prioritised the strengthening of resettlement farms under the Land Reform Programme through improved infrastructure, reliable water supply, and the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, among others.

Another is to ensure sustainable aquifer management by piloting integrated approaches for managing water resources in drought-prone regions to boost climate resilience.

"These projects are being refined to ensure alignment with Namibia's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). As an accredited NIE, EIF will serve as a key national conduit for Adaptation Fund resources, reducing reliance on multilateral intermediaries and fostering a more efficient, country-driven approach to climate adaptation. EIF will ensure all projects adhere to stringent fiduciary, environmental, and social standards."

The EIF says it will soon launch an Adaptation Project Pipeline Development Strategy to maximise the impact of these projects.
