Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba has paid tribute to the late liberation icon and former Namibian Defence Force chief, Solomon Hawala, who died recently aged 89.

Pohamba said Hawala's contribution to the nation's liberation will never be forgotten.

Pohamba, in an interview with NBC News, retraced their journey from the time he met Hawala for the first time.

The former president described the late Hawala as a fearless leader and a dedicated fighter for Namibia's freedom.

Pohamba said Hawala's bravery and strategic thinking played a crucial role in the battles that shaped the country's history, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

The former head of state also commended Hawala's leadership in the Namibian Defence Force, noting that his experience and vision had helped shape the country's defence structures.

As Namibia mourns the loss of a liberation icon, Pohamba commended President Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah on lifting the moratorium on state-funded funerals to ensure a befitting funeral for liberation icons such as Hawala.

Hawala will be buried next week at Old Ongwediva Cemetery in the Oshana Region.

He is survived by his wife, Retired Colonel Laimi Hawala, and six children.
