Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has vowed that Hamas will play no role in the governance of Palestine.

Abbas called on the group and other factions to surrender their weapons to the Palestine Authority, stressing that it was the only body authorised to assume responsibility for governance and security in Gaza.

The Palestinian leader delivered his remarks via video link to the Conference on the Two-State Solution, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia at the United Nations headquarters.

He also praised the international community for rejecting the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, as Israel announced plans to take full control of the enclave amid its ongoing war.

Abbas further urged the release of all hostages held by both Hamas and Israel as more countries moved to formally recognise Palestinian statehood.
