The Namibian National Association of the Deaf (NNAD) has launched its own sign language app with the aim of raising awareness and increasing user adoption of the Namibian sign language.

The NNAD says the Namibian Sign Language app – NAMSLAPP – represents a groundbreaking step towards promoting digital inclusion, accessibility, and empowerment for all Namibians, particularly members of the deaf community.

According to the NNAD, the launch of the application highlights the importance of inclusive technology in bridging communication gaps and advancing equality; it is an initiative that promotes inclusion, innovation, and digital transformation in Namibia.

A lecturer of inclusive education and Namibian Sign Language, Beausetha Bruwer, spoke on behalf of the executive director of the Namibian National Association of the Deaf, Paul Nanyeni.

"The Namibian sign language app represents a fundamental shift in how we approach accessibility in education. NAMSLAP has democratised learning. It places the power to bridge communication gaps not in the hands of a few but in the hands of many."

The Director of Audio-Visual Media at the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Roselia Penda, said NAMSLAP will make Namibian sign language easily accessible on mobile phones and digital platforms.

"This application is not just about technology; it's about inclusion, it's about equality, and it's about, most important of all, respect. It reminds us that everyone, regardless of ability, deserves the opportunity to communicate, to learn and to take part in our digital society."

Namibians are encouraged to download the NAMSLAP App, learn Namibian sign language and share their experiences.
