Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi has confirmed that the recent procurement of 20 vehicles valued at about N$24 million was done in line with the Procurement Act.
This was in response to Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) MP McHenry Venaani, who sought clarity on the procurement of government vehicles.
Nekundi stated that a new fleet of vehicles is procured with each incoming government, and it is based on functional requirements.
"Recognising the current fiscal constraints and the impracticality of having office bearers deliberate with vehicles to use, the commission has resolved to revise the policy proposition for the vehicles issued. The current format permits the procurement of one off-road vehicle per office bearer; that means no more than two vehicles."
Nekundi further stated that the criteria are determined by durability, operational capacity and maintenance efficiency. He pointed out that the vehicles are not meant for personal convenience but rather for official duties.
Also responding to Venaani regarding immovable assets, Nekundi stated that the government owns 9,640 fixed assets valued at over N$47 billion, adding that the acquisition of assets is a continuous process, determined by service delivery needs.
