The Erongo Regional Disaster Risk Management Committee met in Swakopmund for its second quarterly meeting, focusing on growing disaster threats such as veld fires and climate-related risks.
Attendees discussed the increasing number of veld fires reported in the Daures and Karibib constituencies, linked to poor environmental practices and community negligence.
To address the challenge, the committee agreed to set up a standby coordination team to strengthen wildfire response and prevention efforts across the region.
The Municipality of Swakopmund also presented a draft strategy for managing disaster risks to improve coordination, in line with the National Disaster Risk Management Plan.
The initiative forms part of a broader effort to strengthen preparedness and protect communities from increasing climate-related disasters.
