The new Minister of Industries, Mines, and Energy (MIME) says he is not afraid of straight talk with investors in the mining sector.

Modestus Amutse says he intends to ensure that the Namibian nation benefits from the country's natural resources.

During an event to introduce the new MIME Minister to his staff in Windhoek, Amutse stresses that he wants citizens to remember their interactions there, for delivery services they expect.

“The owners of the mines live much better on our mineral resources than we do, and that cannot be good. That's where we have to compel them to assist those communities; that's what other countries do, and if the investors are willing to do it in those countries, why not in Namibia? Unless we don't force them to do it, and personally, I don't fear to face them on our behalf, but don't forget that I said we move together. If I go there to face them, it seems that it's all of us facing them as a collective, and we have to talk to them, and they have to comply.”

Amutse says despite assurances that people living around mines will benefit from extraction, most of those communities lack decent roads and schools.

The Executive Director for MIME, Moses Pakote also underscores service delivery.

“As the way forward, and most importantly, we are the people, and there are no other people going to come in; we are the ones who have to make the things happen, practical results in practical outcomes.”
